Wind energy resource development in the Wocawson area

MRCs of Kamouraska and Témiscouata

Together, the Alliance de l’énergie de l’Est (which brings together 16 MRCs and the Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk First Nation) and Hydro-Québec have delineated a first key wind power development area in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. Located in the regional county municipalities (MRCs) of Kamouraska and Témiscouata, the area is currently estimated to have up to 1,000 MW of new renewable energy generating capacity.

Let’s work together to build Wocawson

With this major development, communities in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region will play a leading role in Québec’s energy transition.

  • Sustainable independent income for the project’s partner communities and shareholders

  • A significant contribution to Québec’s supply of renewable energy

  • Major economic and social spinoffs for the region

1,000 MW of estimated capacity

Covering approximately 700 km², the development area straddles the regional county municipalities of Kamouraska and Témiscouata. It includes the unorganized territories (TNO) of Petit-Lac-Sainte-Anne and Picard, as well as part of the Mont-Carmel and Saint-Athanase municipalities and represents a potential wind power capacity of around 1,000 MW.

Various activities are underway to better document the area. These include installing masts to measure wind power potential, carrying out environmental studies and consulting with local communities. The new information gathered through these processes will help develop wind farm projects in the Wocawson area.

Local words

Wocawson, a Wolastoqiyik word meaning “the wind blows,” embodies movement, change and the invisible forces that shape landscapes and ideas. For the project partners, this name evokes the collective momentum toward a more sustainable future, driven by wind energy, a vital force for the energy transition.
